Check out The Census for a new post by Emily Yankowitz (graduate student in History, Yale University) on the broader meanings of the crossed out or inserted word.
The Census is named for Henrietta Bartlett, scholar in New Haven, and for her pioneering work with Alfred W. Pollard on A Census of Shakespeare Plays in Quarto, 1594-1709 (1916). It is the blog of the Yale Program in the History of the Book.
